All the best for 2014 and a look back to the 3rd SITA-Meeting last

January 2014

The 3rd annual meeting of the Sustainable Information Technologies and Applications (SITA) initiative, dedicated to developing sustainable solutions prescribed by methods of computer science, took place December 11 to 13 with the first PhD Workshop on System Integration of Renewable Energy (WSIRE, 2013). It was held on the campus of the University of Oldenburg and the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK), Institute for Advanced Study, in Delmenhorst. Organized by the PhD program system integration of renewable energies (SEE) and the PhD Program Renewable Energy of the Graduate School "Science and Technology", 70 scientists gathered to discuss the system aspect of the grid integration of renewable energy.

During the first day, workshops and tutorials on various fields such as economic aspects, fundamentals of smart grids or data mining, as well as energy information systems took place. The tutorial program was complemented by demonstrations and lab tours in wind energy and semiconductor research.

On the following day, doctoral students, professors and guests of the University of Victoria (Canada) and the SITA-Research initiative presented their research. Wolfgang Stenzel, Senior Research Fellow of the HWK and supervisor of Energy Research, welcomed the guests then Oliver Kramer, an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and spokesman of SEE, led the all-day program of lectures.

The interdisciplinary character of the conference was highlighted by contributions from various disciplines such as physics, chemistry, computer science, economics and engineering sciences. In the evening, further research was presented in a poster exhibition which set the tone for a dinner at the HWK of interesting and constructive discussions.

The final day was devoted to the subject of international research cooperation with introductions by Professor Reto Weiler, Rector of the HWK, and Professor Bernd Siebenhüner, Vice President for young scientists and quality management of the University of Oldenburg. The conclusion of the event was an interactive "Cafe World" in which the participants were able to contribute their views and experiences on the topics of international research cooperation, inter- and transdisciplinary research and structured doctoral programs.

This great event ends 2013! I hope you had a happy holiday season and I wish you all a fantastic New Year. Thanks to all the hard work for SITA of all SITA-members and supporters, 2013 has been a great year for us. Our research progressed, we initiated new projects, and our published results gained attention at many international conferences.

I thank you all for your dedication, and wish you and your family the best for next year. I look forward to even greater advances and opportunities in 2014. Keep up the good work.

With sustainable regards,
